Lydden Hill

28th June 2003

Maiden Win!

Race 1: Qualified on pole. Finished 1st overall on a very oily track. Fastest Lap

Race 2: Qualified on pole. Finished 1st overall on a still oily track. Fastest Lap

This was my first visit to Lydden, and I was driving the TOM's.

I spent qualifying 1 and 2 getting to know the circuit.

At the start of race 1, I got a good start, but Les Beer got a very good start and passed me within 50 metres. I followed him round for half a lap, then drew alongside him coming out of the hairpin. I managed to hold the inside line down the hill to the next fast right-hander. Neither one of us would back off, and unfortunately Les was unable to hold his line and ran wide into the gravel trap. He managed to get going again, although he lost several seconds. The rest of the race was fairly uneventful, but the TOM's had a lot of corner entry understeer, especially with the oily track. At the end of the race I gave my first 'victory interview' to the commentator.

Race 2 had a similar start to race 1, with Les Beer passing me. I managed to take the place back after half a lap when I pressured him into running wide into a corner. This race has a very high attrition rate, with cars sliding off almost every lap. By the end of the race, only 2 or 3 were still running. I then gave my second interview of the day to the commentator and collected my first trophies.
